It could be a thermostat not opening up to let coolant through system.Other issues could be low coolant levels, low oil. I would check this cheap fixes first.

im guessing its getting higher miles for the year it is. check the coolant level first. possibly get a flush. then check the thermostat. thats also a cheap easy fix. also be sure your fans are turning on. if none of these are the problem then it might be your water pump.

First off, any abundant of smoke steam from exhaust? Check level. Also before checking the thermostat. Roll up a newspaper ,while the car is running stick the rolled up paper to the fan propeller . Gently.. Key>>>>>if the propeller stops <<< u have a bad fan clutch. Replace asap
