ford v6 timing belt or chain?

Asked by Guru91G1Y Jul 05, 2017 at 08:57 PM about the 2011 Ford Edge SEL AWD

Question type: General

does my vin# indicate anything about timing chain or belt for my 2011 edge?

Vin # is irrelevant, all engines used in a 2011 Edge use a timing chain, not a belt. Ford doesn't like belts.

I think the real question is when do you replace a belt and when do you replace a chain Scott

GuruT2JG9, there is no question there. The owners manual prescribes the mileage interval to change the belt. The chain is considered a lifetime part, but it needs changed when you start to hear excessive rattle or the timing is off enough that the engine runs poorly. "Most" vehicles go to a junkyard never having needed the chain changed, though in more recent years with OHC designs, that is changing and many would assume you ought to put a new chain on if you hit 200K mi. and think the vehicle is valuable enough to warranty it - depends on who is doing the work, DIY it's a couple hundred dollars but paying someone else to do it at 200K mi, could cost more than the vehicle is worth at that point (depends on the vehicle).

Your Edge 2015 3.5 has a timing chain, but you could have figured this out doing your own research instead of asking here. I mention this because there will be more events in the vehicle ownership where you must learn to find answers yourself... or pay someone, the former is a much less expensive way to go.

WTF? I was logged in as dave999999999 and received an email notification about this topic, but when I replied, it lists my username as WindyDay42. VERY STRANGE, but whatever!
