hi, have been driving and selling Toyota for 17years I strongly recommend the single cab 2,7l 4 cyl. 24/mi to gallon it is very reliable and easy on your pocket, and your son will enjoy it for long time. will go easy 350k mi. to 450k I have seen lots of the Tacoma with high mi. last for ever. now if you plan to hauling best will be steel the 2,7 l 4x4 5 speed manual.2006 to 2008 some of the best. I have 2008 and love it.. now as far as rust concern if you are in states with snow and solt will be a problem but not where you are now if you like to protect it you can spry undercoating just make shore will be very clean and dry, you can apply rubbing alcohol to the area you plan to spry. best to you bj Arad
