solenoid PO449 error

Asked by madmax1114 Dec 19, 2014 at 05:16 PM about the 2010 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 LTZ 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Took the Suburban in to have the solenoid replaced the check engine light was on and the
battery kept dying but would start with a boost.  A diagnostic was suppose to be done to
confirm the needed repairs however was not done at all. They were suppose to replace the
solenoid but instead replaced the starter 461.00 later the same problem and its back in
the shop. :(  Am I being ripped off?

Some techs have reasoning that repairing a starter is a disservice to the customer. It means it's every future failure has no backing. So as a service to you, they get you a guaranteed part and put it in place. If they had to personally guarantee the work but were subject to a batch of part issues, the shop could be always looking bad and having no recourse. You have to let them check it again, if your code is some kind of evidence there is a wiring fault, it stands to reason the pinpoint test should be expected to send the tech to the evidence. If they guessed and skipped steps, you will know soon enough. Who knows? maybe his dispatcher said put a starter on this and get back up here fast, we have 6 waiters before lunch? If there truly was such a code, and it was cleared from the memory, it may not recur till a drive cycle completes. Many shops, the tech takes it for a complete drive cycle to verify success, much to the chagrin of the dispatcher and the guy paying his labor. This time, ask to speak to a supervisor or manager, introduce yourself and let them know you are squinting one eye at them and have one hand on your belt. Ask for tests defined and test results and explaination of their meaning, please. Have the battery charged up and the full charge circuit tests read and reported, please.

The PO449 error was found at the dealer he told us it was no big issue on the engine at the time and the repair would be 500plus when we brought it to another shop to replace the tires he said he would do the repair for under 400.00 but run a diagnostic to ensure the problem and not charge for the diagnostic. But we found out today no diagnostic was done at all and they just went ahead and did the starter and never did check the engine error light at all.

OHHHH, so you are at a tiiiiirre storrre. That's like getting a steak at a chinese restaurant, neither are at fault, and there's a language and somewhat, a cultural barrier. All right, excuse my prejudice but I have worked for both since tech school, and you have what's called a recheck at one place and a comeback at the other. You have to question the technology of one and trust the other to be the last word. This means you are not keeping your GM car all GM, and that's BAAAD. You must ask yourself if you want one to fix it or the other. at the end, it always costs more to educate the tire store, but that's where dealers sometimes get apprentices. Compare estimates I suppose, or look up the pinpoint tests and see if you want to tackle it.

There's confusion surrounding the code the way I looked it up at engine codes.com The starter solenoid is mentioned describing a shorted wire to ground? The other evidence is about evaporative emission fuel tank vapor vent close or some thing like that. Now i must ask if it was a hard fault, memory code, or enhanced code. Since you had a battery not staying charged, this can be a safety issue. You would theoretically be chancing the short causing very bad damage. since the dealer said, not a serious issue, they must define it as evap emissions code. I honestly have not had the pleasure of this one, so to err with the side of caution. I would disconnect the battery and figure it out. Call your dealer, speak to the same guy and get the discrepancy figured out. If he tells you the starter had no problem, then there must be a separate issue with the battery or charging circuits or alternator. Inspect your battery connections for green cheese inside. you pop the bolt out and slide the cover off. to clean. You can get a code reader at the parts store and see where this leads including running enhanced codes for issues not pertinent to start run perhaps. then google it, decide if you want to continue and verify alternator is working while at the parts store and they check on the car. It's kinda a matter of what you have the patience for. The dealer may know about the duality and have service bulletins or a procedure at the ready. Please report your findings as you go so I can sleep tonite.

The shop assumed responsibility for the error and they kept it overnight to do the needed repairs stating they will make it right I will post once I have the truck back with the final outcome. Thanks Danny.

P0449 has nothing to do with the starter or batteries or draining power. It relates to the evaporator system which won't hinder you from starting or driving the truck. It just sounds like you have a bad battery. The code is for the evaporator purge solenoid, not the starter solenoid.

Did you mean evaporative emissions fuel tank vapor vent close ? Because the (evaporator system) is the air conditioner's method of collecting heat from the passenger compartment. Since the answer is already known, no need to reitterate with terminology that confuses. The existing confusion already explains how the OBDII code messed up both the customer and the shop, caused unnecessary part replacement, and made everyone look like they were wasting the customers time and money. lets not make it worse by involving A/C parts.

I am satisfied with the outcome. Got the truck back yesterday and although they did not do the diagnostic they had promised the first time when they replaced the starter which was not why I brought the tuck in and paid the 461 they owned up to the error did the full diagnostic. After 2 days in the engine check light gave a different error then the dealer showed us (PO449) They got error PO445 and replaced cannister vent solenoid/valve assembly & cannister purge valve. Additionally they replaced the battery saying the starter issue killed the battery or the battery killed the starter. She is back in the driveway and running smoothly. Thanks everyone for the information really appreciate it! Happy holidays :)
