How much research do you do before purchasing a car?

Maybe you just lease for three years?  You don't ever have to worry about serious repairs because you're in essence renting the car and have the option of turning it in?  
Its not just the right model,  but, the best year as well,  like a bottle of fine wine.  
Are all the reports online really that revealing of what you're going to get?
And, what do you do if the car had a stellar reputation just a few years back and you wind up with a disappointing disaster on your hands?

I bought my 2015 Forester and did a lot of research before hand. Unfortunately for me, since I bought it there have been two lawsuits filed over the oil consumption issue which I now have along with the other unfortunate Subaru buyers. Now I see all kinds of references on the web to this problem which I did not see before. I had planned on keeping this car for 200k miles but now am contemplating dumping it after just a few months. The oil consumption issue is not going to go away in my opinion because it is the result of irrational government mileage mandates.
