recreational towing

Asked by rondon Nov 14, 2010 at 09:14 AM about the 2010 Ford Escape Limited FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought my escape to tow behind my motorhome. First time out the transmission
burned up. Ford replaced it and said there were no problems towing 4 wheels
down. Is anyone having troubles or success with this feature.

I just put my 3rd warranty transmission in a mazda tribute..towing 4 wheels down and all the proper proceedures... Mazda said they will not put another one in under warranty...they said we must be doing something wrong....like speeding....we have never been over 60 mph towing...we check the fluid every 3 hrs and run the car as the manuel states.... we have been paranoid about this since it first happened! Now my 66 year old wife has to drive from Pittsfield, Mass to Englewood, Fl behind me as Mazda will not replace another transmission...I have found other horror stories on the web as well...RICK

We bought a new 2009 motor home (1/4 million dollars) and then had a list from Camping World that showed all 4-wheels that could be flat towed. So we bought the new (over priced) Escape. Now we are sitting again tonight in TN with our transmission burned up and sitting at a Ford dealership 100 miles away and they cannot get to it for a week...to even look at it. The dealer told us the Escape could be flat towed, Camping World has been told so, and the manual says it can...you can bet we are not going to be nice this time around.

Since I wrote the last article we contacted the BBB and Mazda has stepped up and installed,at no charge, a Remco transmission pump. The tranny on the Tribute and Escape is not made to pump when the engine is not running so it is not being lubed. I noticed that neither is on the list in the 2012 Dinghy Towing Guide.

If your Escape is front wheel drive putting the front wheels on a dolly will prevent any damage to the transmission.

According to the Owner’s Manual and Ford Towing Guide (online) you can, even the AWD versions. Lots of online entries say it’s not so, however.

NO towing an '02-'08 (?) w/the wheels on the ground UNLESS it's a MANUAL transmission. Front wheel drive Automatic can be towed w/the front wheels on a tow dolly/dingy, otherwise NO.
