steering wheel control backlighting for 2010 Ford Escape XLT

Asked by jimbo010 Jan 07, 2016 at 10:16 AM about the 2010 Ford Escape XLT FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the cruise and radio control buttons on the steering wheel do not light up and are hard to see at night. I inherited this vehicle from my mother and don't know if they are supposed to be illuminated. If they are what could be the issue. All other interior lighting is working.

The backlighting for the switches is part of the switch pack itself, and they can dim or brighten with the cluster dimmer switch. If there is no light at all and the switches function properly otherwise the led is probably burned out and the whole switch would have to be replaced to get them to light up.

is the whole steering wheel covered by one LED light assembly because both sides are out. The cruise control and the radio which are on opposite sides of the wheel.

They both get their lighting signal from the same place. The dimmer switch controls all adjustable lighting, cluster, floor shifter, steering wheel, message center etc. Each of these parts have their own light respectively but dim together. If all of the other lights brighten and dim with the switch then the problem will be isolated to the steering area. These switches use the clockspring to communicate with their modules and if they work other than the light I would think that its either their leds or the connection behind the airbag. Don't get too far ahead of yourself, eliminate all of the things that are shared with other parts of the car then isolate the cause.
