Squeak & Loss of Momentum

Hi there  - On  Thanksgiving this year, while on the highway our Subaru did
something weird...it felt like my foot had slipped off the gas for a split second,
(loss of momentum) and it was accompanied with a quick squeak sound (like
that of shoes on a BB court). It just turned over 101K and I know it needs a
timing belt/water pump/serpentine belt replacement, which will be done next
week. BUT the loss of momentum makes me think transmission. I don't want
to put all that money into the above listed repairs when my transmission could
be failing. Any ideas what that weird squeak and loss of momentum is? (OH -
and it happens at any speed, not just high way speed).

You may have had an engine miss. If you have never tuned it up you are due. Is the check engine light on? I would go ahead with the timing belt change as soon as you can.

Thank you - No engine light comes on and it's doing it pretty regularly. However, I just remembered something - the morning of Thanksgiving, my car was basically OUT OF FUEL. So we filled it up and hit the road = that is when the issue began. At that time, my first thought was "bad fuel....?" is that a possibility? I have put gas in it from the same station since then - so maybe that not it. But maybe a fuel filter issue? Still, that squeak sound! Ugh.

Fuel pump may be on the way out. Change the fuel filter too.
