Standard transmission has lower towing capacity than automatic?

HI,

I have never towed anything before, and wanted to know the capacity of my Ranger before offering help to my brother.  I found a PDF at the Ford website which confirmed max towing capacity as 5860lbs, but gave a lower figure for a manual transmission.
