timing chain

Hi Ron bought an 09 ranger a year ago had it certified ran great but I wasn't
able to drive it for about 9 months I tried starting it and it backfired
subsequently i got it towed to the mechanic he said there was oil in the fuel
cleaned the manifold replaced spark plugs and battery and it still won't run he
says there is a skip in the timing chain and that i should replace the motor is
there any other cheaper fix i can do seems like a big problem from a truck that
was running and driving fine just a few months ago.

Find a different mechanic, this doesn't sound like a timing chain. It could be ignition timing, did they do a compression test? Timing chains can slip when the engine is turned off but usually run sluggishly just prior. Anyway you don't replace engines because of a bad chain. I would look at the TFI module. I hope this helps.
