if you would have read the manual, or if u didn't see a switch u should have used your head and realized it was AWD

The problem with "read the manual" is that not everyone has one, especially if they got the vehicle used. The dash also has an emblem that says "4WD". I don't know the correct terminology, but it does engage all 4 wheels, and you will briefly see "4WD" light up on the dash lights when it does.

Wow Mark that was uncalled for not everyone is as smart as you when it comes to cars. Next time I will use my head and not use this site again. I knew it was awd I just thought there maybe a back up switch to turn it on and off. Thanks for having your head up your ass

The 2013 Ford escape are NOT all wheel drive. They are 4×4. It says 4×4 in 5 different places. So if YOU would have looked at the vehicle, you wouldn't have made such a smart ass comment that was WRONG.

These comments are not helpful to anyone! The last post refers to a 2013 model, the question was about a 2005. Just answer the original questioner that there is no way to manually switch this.

So, gathering from all the bullshit replies, yes it is 4wd, but guessing that the vehicle automatically goes into 4wd when it feels it is needed. Basically it is Fwd until 4wd is required, there is no switch inside the vehicle.

The badge may say 4WD but they are not. AWD is what you actually have. A real 4WD has a 2 speed transfer case.
