Are the aftermarket catalytic converters just as good as GM converters?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2009 Chevy Traverse LT AWD.  We just had to replace the engine.  I
am now getting a PO420 OMDII code which probably means my catalytic
converter firewall side has gone bad. I was told that the aftermarket converters
will not work as well as GM ones and will cause the engine light to come on
again.  Is this the case?

Thanks for your help. The dealer and another shop took a look at it and said replace the converter. The article you sent had this line toward the end and it backs up what the dealer said: "We strongly recommend that if you need to replace the catalytic converter that you replace it with an original manufacturer brand unit (i.e. get it from a dealership). Second choice would be a high-quality replacement part such as a 50-state legal cat. There are many stories in our forums where folks replaced the cat with a cheaper aftermarket one only to have the code return shortly thereafter." I want to replace it myself, but it that converter looks like a booger to get to. Thanks again.

Thank you. Looks like I'm gonna find the cheapest GM cat online and take it to a shop. Dealer was going to charge around $1132.00 to repair. They have always been great to us, but I am just trying to go cheap as I can after spending money on the new engine. Thanks again.
