Overheating damage control

Engine overheated. Towed and replaced radiator which was cracked. The
screws to the air condition unit were all rusted perhaps the cause of the
leakage does this car have the ability to shut the motor down when the
computer senses the overheating before to much damage is done

If it over heated from lack of coolant and you shut it down A.S.A.P then it should be O.K. Perhaps the mechanic should have could have done a quick compression test or look for other signs of blown head gasket .
