Grinding noise from rear differential on 2005 Ford Escape

There is a grinding noise coming from the rear
differential, the fluid itself was low and there was a
lot of metal shavings inside. What could be
causing the grinding noise?

If it was low on oil, the bearings and the gears were running dry, the metal shavings indicate some obvious damage. Your differential is in need of serious repair
