From what I figure, looking up prices of the parts, if he does front and rear brakes including new brake calipers, and replacement of the oil pan gasket, he would be charging about $100. per hr. for 12 hours of work. So you mentioned just the front rotors and brake pads, as calipers do not necessarily need replacing, but like to for warranty work, I'd say he may be overcharging you by about $500. So it depends on how extensive the brake work gets.

A BMW is an expensive car to maintain- what you are saying here just confirms that- it sounds about right to me- because the WORST thing that can happen is that you get a mediocre mechanic who can't do the work right- and you wind up getting it fixed TWICE- try to avoid that- so there it is! the parts cost a lot and a good BMW mechanic will charge a premium for his labor- and the world keeps turning and the sun keeps shining and you keep cruising in your BMW looking down on us lesser mortals who can't afford one-

This has nothing to do with European cars being expensive to maintain, this just seems to be a mechanic that is over charging you. Time to find a new mechanic... one that specializes in BMWs. $1,000 for a battery and starter? Are they made of gold?
