2008 Subaru Imp 2.5 Balloon Noise

Asked by GuruHWWXV Jul 08, 2019 at 02:23 PM about the 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an automatic non turbo 08 imp with around
97 k miles.  I have been getting this noise from the
engine area that sounds like air being let out of a
balloon 'Screeeee!'.  Only happens after driving for
about 6 minutes and only happens when I get to
around 30 mph.  I can stop it by putting the car into
neutral.  Sound also stops when downshifting
while slowing down towards a stop.
I can't make the noise occur while in neutral and
revving the engine.
Any thoughts on what this is?

It might be your serpentine belt squealing because of a pulley not turning freely. The idler pulley is the most common failure but also check if the A/C compressor is seized up. Inspect belt for damage....burnt rubber smell.
