Wining noise

Asked by Medford Aug 25, 2018 at 12:45 PM about the 2008 GMC Envoy SLT-1

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a wining noise coming from the
opposite side of engine that normally
identify with a bad power steering unit.
The only thing I can think to do to identity
where it is coming from is remove the belt
and turn by hand each pulley wheel and
maybe identify the source.  Does anyone
have any other suggestions?

Sometimes a transmission will whine if it's low on fluid or if it has high mileage especially if the filter and fluid have never been changed. Alternators can whine too, especially under heavier loads....will get louder. Some mechanics will listen to each component by pressing a metal tubing against it and listening on the other end. Sorta like a doctor with a stethoscope.

Bad Idler pulley bearing on the I6 engine make the same noise as a bad "Ford" haha power steering noise. 5 min job, cheap. But you're on the right track. Check the water pump too, try and wiggle the fan, should have no movement.
