Why do I have Mass Air Flow errors

I have a 2008 mini cooper hatchback.  Mass Air Flow sensor boggs the engine
down and when I unplug it the motor idles fine.  Help

I've heard if you un plug them and it runs o.k. then it's a bad sensor , you could try cleaning it with the right stuff as they are sensitive and can be ruined by the wrong stuff ,
