2008 dodge charger steering rack fix?

Asked by BobbyFaux Apr 18, 2014 at 10:20 AM about the 2008 Dodge Charger SE RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So 2 months a go a bought a 2008
dodge charger SE for $11,600, little
under 60,000 miles on it.(warranty
expired) which I'm currently paying a
loan on. the car drives great besides
the steering. It doesn't return fully to
center and is sort of stiff at times
noticeabley.  Ive done researched,
brought it in to a couple shops, and
figured it needs a new steering rack
& pinion, right outer tie rod and upper
ball joint. These parts alone aren't
expensive if i buy them myself but
the mechanics are probably getting
the most expensive ones parts
because they gave me an estimate
1,500 to fix it all. with a warranty. any
who my few questions are.

1. What happens if I continue driving
in my current condition?

2. Is the mechanic price a rip off?

3.  Am i better off buying the parts
and having my mechanic friend do
it?

also any comments or advise is
welcome :) thank you

its better to take it to a friend because all shops charge way to much. now if you did it yourself. it wouldnt cost much. as for 1,500 for that little bit of work is overly way to much. it should only be $700 tops.

also ball joints do not have nothing to do with steering or pull issues to the right or left. sway bar and bushings might possibly be it along with few minor things. but a 2008 model should not be worn that badly already. 2nd how new are the tires?

The tired need to be changed to they don't have much tread left on them either. I'm just concerned bout the steering I'm afraid of it being something vital or if I can get by for some time. But first I'll just need to figure EXACTLY what the deal is
