what has been the determined fix for the starting issues with the RX8

Asked by Excursion_1142 Mar 07, 2017 at 01:20 PM about the 2008 Mazda RX-8 Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have replaced the battery - coils/plugs - only run premium fuel - my son
red lines it when he drives it - why is it with this car once it warms up and you
drive to say maybe get gas - it won't start up when you get back in it -
what kind of diagnosis can you suggest?  the Mazda dealer thinks I'm stupid
for asking for a starter replacement.... it does crank - just won't turn over warm

Inherent design problems everyone knows the Mazda RX8s were a major fail the Wankel (rotary) design was dropped years ago because of all the issues the Mazda dealer knows all too well! Floods out unless run till heated, burns as much oil as fuel etc..etc.. these were novelty cars. Plenty of online info.

Great cars, but engine design was lacking. I have often wondered how many engines Mazda has had to replace under warranty over the years. I'll bet it is thousands. Run a current draw test on the starter. It may be drawing too many amps to turn over when warm. Also check the connections at the starter and battery. These connections must be absolutely clean and free from corrosion.

I had this exact problem at less than 135k miles. Guru 1Y61 is correct: Low compression. I just noticed that this thread is from a year ago, so you've probably replaced or had your engine rebuilt.
