Towing with 4 cyl Camry

Asked by willybilly Aug 18, 2019 at 01:58 AM about the 2008 Toyota Camry SE

Question type: General

I believe the towing capacity is 1000 lbs. On rare occasions, I may have to tow a combined trailer/cargo weight of 1000-1300 lbs on flat roads for a one-way distance of 10-15 miles at speeds of 45 mph max. Should I be concerned about engine/transmission damage?

I don't see an issue. Make sure your cooling system is in good shape, the oil topped off and go ahead and change the transmission fluid.

Thanks F_O_R_ As for the tranny fluid, the car has <44K miles. I drained and changed the fluid @30K. At 60K, I plan on dropping the tranny pan to change the filter along with new gasket and fluid.

Keep an eye on the fluids color. If it turns brown or black you waited too long. When towing you need to make sure the tires are aired up properly. I would run the rear tires at the maximum allowed pressure (as shown on the sidewall).

I'm no Mr. Goodwrench, but have enough know-how to keep up with stuff I'm able to. I normally run tires at 2-3 psi above what's posted on door jam. I get what you're saying about tranny fluid color. Thanks for responding to my ?
