dpf filter removal

Asked by memorg Jan 01, 2017 at 08:15 PM about the 2008 Ford F-450 Super Duty XLT Crew Cab LB DRW RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2008 ford f-450 6.4L with 148k. when
driving it smokes a lot and "cleaning exhaust
system" message is always on. following that the
engine light came on and "engine power reduced "
message appeared. so I decided to remove the
DPF filter thinking it was clogged, which it was.
turn it on and stayed on fine for 15 min then turned
it off and back on, but wouldn't start or crank at all.
what are my options to fix this problem?? do I have
to buy a tuner or re-install the DPF back in order for
it to turn on??

You'll need a delete tune for it to run. Otherwise with a stock tune and that filter gone it won't run. What you described it doing is called "regen" and it's normal. When that message appears you need to jump on the highway and maintain a steady cruise until the message clears.
