How many catalytic converters on my 2008 Subaru Forester?

I have a 2008 Subaru Forester Sport X non-turbo that needs a new catalytic
converter.  My questions are these:  How many catalytic converters does the
car have?  When shopping for parts online there are two different models
which they call front and rear converters.  How can I tell which one I need?  
I've looked under the car and see a flat, oval type about 1/2 way between the
engine and muffler but could there be a second one too?

To know for sure you need to use the emissions information on the sticker under the hood. There are numbers on the sticker that are used to get the exact correct parts.

I highly recommend finding a muffler shop that specializes in cat replacement. They will make sure you get the correct setup and you will need them anyway to weld the new cats in. In California you not only have to look up the correct cat using the emissions numbers, you also have to check to see if the state has approved the cats for use in Kalifornia. They maintain a database that you can check but approval one day does not mean it is approved next week!
