The key has an EWS imobolizer chip inside that must be functioning and present for the vehicle to release the start signal. You will likely need a new key which your local dealer or indy shop can order with a copy of your drivers license and vehicle registration. Please keep in mind you will need both to be current and matching. A key retails around $190 for your X5. Hope this helps!
