I have an 05 Outback with a bad California emissions motor in it. I purchased a low mileage JDM Federal emissions engine to replace it with. Also 05 EGR .Do I have to switch the intake over ?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Do I have to switch the intake from my 05 California emissions engine onto my
05 JDM Federal emissions engine to get it to run correctly, when I install the
new engine in my 05 Outback? Or can I make the Federal emissions engine
work the way it is? I will be installing improved head gaskets in it before putting
it in, so will have it apart anyway.

Good luck getting a Federal engine to pass California emissions. Why won't your engine pass inspection?

I live where I don"t have to worry about Emissions in Pa. The car came from a state that requires California Emissions, so as such has that type of engine in it. Engine has no oil pressure (Did the Checks) and has all indications that the bottom end has damage. Was cheaper to buy the low mileage JDM and use it as a long block, or complete replacement, than to buy a new short or long block. They are out of their minds on pricing for a good used "California emissions" engine for my car.

BTW: Just trying to find out if the engine management system in my car will except the Federal emissions engine, or whether I will have to change all the bolt on's from old engine to new one to make it run.

Hey GuruBTWLT...I now have the same issue you had. What ended up working for you? Thanks

you can only use the block from fed engine. heads and intake are different on Cali engine, and must be used on new block for it all to work. Also wiring harness. You have to change out the stock head gaskets anyway. Search for a EJ259 engine from 04 Legacy as it is Subaru oddball Cali engine like 05. Used in some applications 03-05. These are ULEV engines.

Also watch out for price gouging on gasket sets. Rock auto appears to be the most honest place to get them, and make sure you buy quality parts. I put a china made timing belt in & at 35k it broke and FUBARed 1st engine I built. So had to go through it all again but this time with nothing but top end parts and low mileage 04 Legacy EJ259 out of MA. Lesson learned the hard way! Keyword :California Emissions. EJ259/253
