Could be bad head gasket. Clogged coolant port in head. They are known for coolant leaks through the plastic two piece thermostat housing which drips some times unnoticed (other than a sweet smell) onto motor and runs low on coolant which causes motor to over heat than the head/s warp. I've pulled heads off that were caked with white stuff inside. Sometime people put in fix a leak sealers trying to fix leaks which clog up coolant systems. Every explorer I ever had developed a coolant leak from thermostat housing which has to be addressed before overheating..

Are you certain that when coolant was put in all the pockets of air were displaced in the system? Many times coolant is poured in to the radiator until it overflows then the cap is put back on thinking the system is full but when the engine begins to run the coolant" displaces the voids and on rechecking you may find that your system is no where near being full. Another important item is the radiator cap ,, the radiator caps purpose is to prevent coolant from becoming steam (you can't cool anything with a gas) It uses the basic laws of physics that say's water can't boil under pressure (power plants keep water from boiling up to 1000 degrees) ... My point is make sure your caps is not only good but is sealing the pressure. Are you certain the cooling fan is working? A faulty sensor may keep the engine fan from coming on
