What other engines (for example a Ford Ranger) are interchangeable with a 2004 4.0L Ford Explorer?

I have a 2004 4.0L Ford Explorer which threw a rod. I am having a hard time finding a reasonably priced replacement engine. Is there another Ford engine I could look at also that is interchangeable with this one?

The 4.0 SOHC engine you have in your vehicle was used from mid 1999. One from those vintages should work.
Keep in mind the engine you have in your vehicle has cams on both sides. Replacing the tensioners for the chain is doable for the front but the engine has to be removed from the vehicle to replace the guides on the rear. They are subject to wear. If you purchase a used engine I would suggest you replace the guides on the front and rear before installation.
