If you have a rod knock the engine needs to come out. Most likely it will need a full rebuild.
Is a shop recommending replacement or is there an obvious defect you are trying to repair? As FOR said rod problems are significant labor and parts cost. Be cautious about who you are dealing with and get a second opinion before turning the first nut.
