Update the transmission on my 2005 Ford Explorer xlt 4.0 l

What to update my transmission.   I get fair mileage.  
15 city.  19+ on highway.   Truck is in good
condition.   Want to see if I can get better mileage.  
Have the towing package.    Don't want to loose
5000 lb towing availability.  
Ideas?

Buy a newer Eco-Boost truck or SUV. Changing the transmission to a new 8 or 10 speed is not feasible. You could change out the rear differential to a higher ratio but I doubt you would gain any fuel economy and it would reduce your towing capacity.
