What caused the car to overheat?

My friend has a 2007 Ford Five Hundred.  
After about 3 hours of normal driving (17
miles), she noticed smoke in her garage.  
She also noticed the hood of the car was
extremely hot.  She didn't notice any
dashboard warnings nor any fluids on the
garage floor.
