Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My cobalt started making a whining noise the other day and it sounded like a power steering pump going bad and now it only makes the whining noise when I back up.

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2007/chevrolet/cobalt/recalls/ -- check out these recalls for your car. One is for power steering. Also a major one for your ignition switch. Failure to have these replaced can result in serious injury or death. If you have not had them taken care of I would advise you to get to your dealer ASAP.

Cobalts don't have power steering pumps. they use an electric motor on the steering column. As for the whine in reverse, i'd say the reverse gear is a spur gear which tend to make more noise. That is normal.
