Looking at buying a 2006 A6 4.2, any advice?
The A6 has 180000 Kms. I currently have a 2001 2.8 Avant and it hasn't been
without its issues. What should I look out for with this model?
Any advice is welcome.

I have a 2005 A6 4.2 and the big issue you need to determine is whether the timing chain has been replaced yet. I'm not sure when Audi went from belt - in front of the engine - to chain (between the engine and the transmission) but I know the newer (i.e. 2011) 4.2 FSI motors have chains. Replacing that $90 chain and the $100 tensioners at a dealer will cost between $6k and $11k (the range of pricing I received) because the front end has to come off and the motor needs to be removed. I paid $3k at an independent mechanic. I now have 165k miles - runs great but nickel-diming me. Good luck!
