Your VIN number should tell you what the car should have had. You'll need to try to find engine codes on the side of the block to tell you what's in it now.

If you have a V8 in it, it'll be a 260ci V8. 289's weren't put in until 1965. If it's an Inline 6, it'll be a 170ci engine. 200ci I-6's weren't till later as well. As previously stated, check your vin number or data plate on your drivers door to find out more info. There is alot of info here on the internet to determine what those codes mean.
