Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car has struts... Is it best to change out the entire assembly  strut and spring or just what is needed?  In this case struts all 4 of them.  How would you be able to tel if the whole assembly is needed?

The springs rarely go bad. but you have to be careful taking them apart they can be extremely dangerous and a pain putting them back together.

if you are only going to replace the shock portion, you will need a spring compressor. by the time you buy the tool, you may just want to replace the entire strut. it is much easier and safer for someone who is inexperienced.
