Kia Rio 2007 will crank & not start
Kia Rio LX (03/2007) 1.4L 5 speed manual
- 4 door hatch
Started stalling occasionally when driving,
usually when slowing for a corner or traffic
lights. Stalling became more frequent,
happening once a week. Had a full service
including fuel filter & spark plugs. They did
a diagnostic scan & couldn't find a direct
reason for the surging, said it could be one
of many things!
Stalling became worse, 2 or more times a
week, car would stall & engine cut out,
would crank but wouldn't start, let it sit for
about an hour & it would start again.
Bought & installed a new fuel pump, car
wouldn't start, put the old pump back in &
it started once, then would crank & not
start. Read online it could be the
crankshaft position sensor, bought a new
one & installed it, would crank & not start.
Took off the idle air control valve & it was
filthy & wouldn't move, cleaned it out with
carby spay & put it back on, would crank &
not start (so it has spark). Sprayed carby
spray into air intake & the car started &
stopped once the spray burnt off.
You seem to know your cars, it sounds as if you are doing all the right things, have you check the fuel pressure regulator....
lol! Total novice here I'm learning through necessity, trying not to throw cash away on unnecessary parts in the (costly) process of elimination! The internet is an awesome teacher, I've watched heaps vids on YouTube, the mechanics etc who go to the trouble of making them are legends!! I've not checked the fuel pressure regulator, I'll check it & get back to you... & thanks for helping

Do you know by chance where it is located?? I had a look online & nothing tells me directly where to find it...it's not at the beginning of the fuel rail...
Normally at the beginning of the rail, but I found the part on line and says in the tank, did you see it in there when you changed the fuel pump...see below copy and paste

I know right!! I saw both of those from those websites before I saw your reply & wondered why they were different!! I've been searching for some reference to its location & haven't found anything I had a brief look in the tank when I pulled the pump out (again!) earlier today to see if there was anything obviously wrong with it & don't recall seeing it... I'll keep searching
Also, my car is a 1.4L but when I search for parts for Kia Rio 2007 LX they show them as being a 1.6L!!
Ill keep looking....
FYI, are you sure about the 1.4, everything says you have a 1.6, see below copy and paste...
I wanted to be sure so I checked the folder that came with the car & the maintenance book said it was 1.4L (see photo attached), almost all specs I found said it's 1.6L...
These are the correct specs I found online...
Excellent just need to find where the regulator is, As I said most are on the rail...I have a few things to do, I'll check into more...
I've had a look everywhere on the fuel rail & it's not there, from what I've found online the regulator is in the fuel tank, apparently in the fuel pump assembly ♀️ looks like the fuel pump assembly will be coming out again. Although I'm not sure that will be the issue as the fuel pump seems to be working ok. I'll check anyway, but wonder if there is something else I've missed...
Update of what's been done: Kia Rio JB LX (03/2007) 1.4L 5 speed manual - 4 door hatch. * Started stalling occasionally when driving, usually when slowing for a corner or traffic lights. * Stalling became more frequent, happening once a week. * Had a full service including fuel filter & spark plugs. They did a diagnostic scan & couldn't find a direct reason for the surging, said it could be one of many things! * Stalling became worse, 2 or more times a week, car would stall & engine cut out, would crank but wouldn't start, let it sit for about an hour & it would start again. * Figured it was the fuel pump so bought & installed a new one, car wouldn't start, put the old pump back in & it started once, since then it will only crank & not start. Disconnected the fuel line from it & ran it, it was pumping fuel, confirmed it worked. Although strangely I no longer hear it running for those few seconds when the key is turned. * Checked all the wires & connections in the engine bay, everything seems to be ok. * Checked all fuses/relays in the fuse box in the engine bay & inside the car below the steering wheel. Nothing blown. * Read online it could be the crankshaft position sensor, bought a new one & installed it, would crank & not start. * Noticed a weird noise coming from the air intake area, investigated & found it was coming from the Idle Air Control Valve, took it off & it was filthy & wouldn't open/close, cleaned it out with carby spay & put it back on, would crank & not start. * Sprayed carby spray into air intake & the car started & stopped once the spray burnt off (so it has spark). * Tested fuel was getting to the fuel rail, disconnected the fuel line from the fuel rail (as there is no schrader valve for this car) & attempted to start car, fuel pumped through, so it's getting fuel through. * The Tacho gauge moves when the key is turned (to approx .5). That just about covers all the things they suggest in the 'crank - no start' YouTube videos, If anyone has any other ideas I would be most grateful to hear them.
Im still saying it's the fuel pump and or the regulator attached to it, it hard to say for sure because there is no way for you to test the pressure...even though it was a new pump it could have been bad...
Just read a thread on a no start such as you are having, from my understanding there are times you can get a vapor build up in the gas tank due to a defective tank evap system that causes the fuel pump to work harder then it should, they say take the fuel cap off and try to start....
Tried taking the fuel cap off & starting it, wouldn't start
Spoke to a mechanic on the phone today about the issue & he said it sounds like a fuel pressure problem, he said the best way to test fuel pressure is to remove the inlet fuel line where it connects to the fuel rail, hold your thumb tightly over the end of the hose & have someone attempt to start the car, if the fuel sprays out like water out of a hose then pressure is good (he said it's nearly impossible to stop it spraying out if the pressure is good), if the fuel doesn't spay out then it's a pressure issue. Gave it a go & the fuel didn't spray out! Sounds like it could very well be the Fuel pressure regulator (like you said!) so I pulled out the fuel pump assembly (again!) to try & find the regulator. It wasn't obvious straight away, but when I took the bottom cover off (that holds the pump in) & there it was! It easily pulled out of the pump filter unit. I'll take it with me tomorrow & try & get a new one. Odd thing is though, this fuel pressure regulator looks nothing like the ones I've searched up for my car

So I managed to get a new fuel pressure regulator (after a lot of research to find the part no!) it seems the old one was missing the filter ring around the bottom of it! (See the comparison photo attach, the new one has the white ring) installed it last night & tried starting the car, it didn't start checked to see if the fuel pressure had improved by doing the 'thumb test' (I mentioned this technique previously), the fuel sprayed out like it's meant to, so I now know the fuel pressure is back to normal! Sprayed some carby cleaner in the intake & the car started & kept running for about 15 minutes, wanted to make sure it was good before taking it for a drive & turned it off, tried to start it again & it wouldn't start Now sounds like it's starving for air, will check out that after work this afternoon....!
That's strange it would start and then die, i wish you could get a gauge on the hose and see what the pressure is, take the air intake off and that should give you enough air pressure...
So the mechanic came over & in less than 10 minutes OMG the car was fixed!!!! When the car was serviced the fuel pump filter changed, in that process the assembly was dismantled & put back together onto the new filter. The cause for it not starting was the O ring & the spacer on the top of the pump where it pushes up into the filter were around the wrong way (meant to be O ring then the spacer!), causing it to not connect properly!! Every time I took it out to check it I was careful to put it back in the way I found it the first time, not knowing it was wrong ♀️ Mechanic pinpointed it straight away pulled out the pump swapped them over, put the pump back in & it started! At least I know there are a few parts that won't need replacing anytime soon (as I replaced them in the process of elimination) & the Idle air intake won't need cleaning for a while. YAY!!!
