no reverse after being parked (believed to be a 700R4)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1991 1500 Suburban that was parked while I was out of country for about 1 1/2 years. I started it the other day and found that it doesn't have reverse at all. All the forward gears work as they should as well as the 4 wheel drive, but it feels like reverse it gone all together. Any help would be great. Thanks Steve

Hi Steven ... The first thing you do is make sure the transmission fluid level is where it should be. If the fluid is low, you should fill to the proper level and see if that fixes the problem. if it does, see if you can find the leak and you should probably flush the tranny for good luck. If that's not the problem you are probably looking at defective vacuum or linkage controls, and/or internal clutch or band failure. All are serious issues and need professional intervention. Hope that helps, good luck!
