2007 Toyota Camry difficulty starting on occasion.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car runs great, not missing or misfiring. Has trouble about every other time
starting. Determined it is a fuel delivery problem by using starting fluid. Engine
will crank and crank but wont start. I can wait ten minutes, come back and it
will start. Someone suggested it might be the crank sensor (getting wet by
water from engine?).  I was thinking if it might be the fuel pump, but then I
would be having trouble on the road. Not the case. So far it runs perfect. Fuel
filter?  I would think this would also cause problems when on the road.  The
problem is intermittent, so the dealer doesn't know what to do. Is something
sending a signal to the fuel pump not to run on startup, but once it starts, then
everything is fine?

I would disagree it's the crank sensor as they generally signal spark. When you use starting fluid does it actually start or cough and signs of life? Camshaft sensors often control fuel injection timing on the other hand, both can and crank sensors are usually easy to test (resistance) with a basic multimeter if you can find the proper values they are supposed to have. It wouldn't hurt to swap the fuel pump relay for a known good one either to either prove or eliminate it as the issue

Thank you. Your answer was very helpful. In answer to your question, it sputtered and showed signs of life, but did not actually start. It proved to me that it wasn't a spark problem, but didn't help diagnose anything else.

But it did help eliminate a couple things which brings you closer to diagnosing the issue!
