Intermittent Startup problem with 2007 Toyota Camry LE 4 Cylinder

Asked by apatel5800 Dec 02, 2016 at 03:16 PM about the 2007 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have intermittent start up problem with my 2007 Toyota
Camry LE (2.4 Liter 4 Cylinder Engine). If I drive the car for
long time, and happened to turn off the car and then
immediately attempt to start the car, it seems the problem
with start up happens more frequently. I would then let
open the hood and let the car maybe cool down for 10-15
mins and then typically it would start. This happened more
often in warmer summer weather but also happened
recently when weather was in 50s. So far I've changed
spark plugs (all 4), oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, etc.

Mileage? Have you noticed any warning lights on or flashing?

Sometimes when starters get older, bearings wear out and you get what is called a hot soak no start problem. Often a rebuilt starter will fix the problem, or you may be able to fabricate a heat shield out of thin aluminum, similar to the one you might find between a catalytic converter and the body of your car. Starters don't like heat.

Oh and one more thing, sometimes starters develop what is known as a dead spot on the armature. This will also result in intermittent starting problems, and solution is still a rebuilt starter. Hope this helps.

OK...so this issue has NOT been resolved? We need to clearly define the issue. This "intermittent start up"...does this mean the engine will sometimes not CRANK over like the battery is dead....or....the engine cranks over well...but will not Fire Up(start)?

My neighbor had the exact problems for months, I changed many parts and nothing fixed it until I changed the fuel pump module assembly located inside the fuel tank. Car starts up every time now for over 3 years.

Thanks for that input. Good repair. Anyone else with similar experience. We learn from each other.

My son's car is having a similar issue (2007 Toyota Camry LE). Intermittent, it could be cold or hot, doesn't matter. Each of the two times that we took it to the mechanic they couldn't duplicate the issue. You don't want to flood it but giving it gas seems to help so maybe a dirty fuel filter is the problem here also? Also saw this article.
