Car not starting

Asked by Shejuli Oct 15, 2013 at 11:33 AM about the 2002 Buick LeSabre Limited Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Replaced battery, starter and starter relay. All lights come on but no ignition when turning the key. However I'm able to use jumper wire to starter relay and car will start and run for only a few seconds. Any ideas?

Turn the key on and leave it on for about 10 seconds the only lights that should stay on are the oil pressure, battery, check engine. Any other lights still on after that? Could be a break in the wire between the ignition switch and starter, could be the ignition switch itself, have you checked the voltages at the fuses with the key on? Ignition switch being partially burnt out could allow the engine to run for a few seconds but once the comedian inside the switch gets hot the resistance increases killing voltage to necessary areas. Do you know how to use a volt/ohm meter?

Is there a raised chip on your car key? If so, it may simply be the anti-theft system. If you have another key, try it. It may just be that it would work. Happened to me. Used my wife's key and it started right up!
