When we try to start the car it acts like it wants to
start but won't

If the car cranks over when you turn the key but doesn't turn over or start, you need to check for spark and fuel pressure. So there will be some bit of testing involved. You can rent a fuel pressure test gauge at a auto parts store. youtube has help videos on how to perform these tests. If you are not good with cars, have it towed to a garage.
