300400 miles on
transmission and
reverse does not

Can a clogged
filter be a cause?

A clogged filter if it affected any of the gears would most likely affect all of them. But sounds like something else. Automatic transmission yes? If all the forward gears seem to work and only reverse has trouble it may be the clutch for the reversing gears. Automatic transmissions have several clutches in them and one can fail while leaving the others operable. That said, the last two times i have had an automatic transmission fixed it cost over $2000 each time. Next time it happens to me I will go buy a used one at the junk yard and swap it out myself.
