I own a 2007 Grand Prix 3.8L v-6. What is a charging system failure?

Asked by Dona Oct 03, 2012 at 05:21 PM about the 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The problem started with the battery cables not being installed properly now I'm getting a system failure display and the vehicle is shutting down all unessential functions. It goes into battery saving mode. Once I turn the vehicle off it won't start without a jump.

I just read from another site this smae issue check your connectons to battery, altenator, ground for looseness and have your battery and altenator checked at advance or napa or auto zone

Probably just a dead battery. Get the battery tested at an Auto zone or Advance Auto Parts. I believe they do it for free. If it's not the battery, then you probably need a new alternator.

If your vehicle goes into "battery saving mode" then it is detecting that the alternator isnt pumping enough juice. I stopped trusting autozone to test things ever since it took them 7 tries testing my starter to realize the positive lead doesnt go on the heat shield, I would have asked for the manager but i was already talking to him... Check connections and battery, alternator, and grounds. If the alternator is truely bad your battery will run dead and will be bad, autozone will tell you its bad, change it and it will go bad again. All it takes to test an alternator is a volt meter and knowing the difference between 12v and 14v. Car should have 12v not running and around 14v running. If your car has a guage on the dash check that. Even if has no numbers see if it's higher running than off. If not than you have an alternator problem.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, when I start it, I get a reading saying that the charging system failure but it starts any way, plus I do hear a ticking sound but it goes away after about 10 minutes, what seems to be the problem ?

My voltage readout shows 14.3v within a few sec starting my car. When driving at high speed(say above 40mph it stays between 13.8 and 14.2v. However when I get into town and my speed slows the voltage drops into the mid to low 13v range. Any ideas?

I’m having an issue with mine but when I turn the key over my horn will honk, sometimes the truck will open and the headlights and dash lights flicker every single time… idk WHAT it could be at this point.
