Transmission Slipping

Asked by Austin May 27, 2018 at 12:54 AM about the 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is idling at around 600 rpm’s which seems a
bit low. When I start accelerating I will almost need
to floor it in order for it to catch the next gear.
Sometimes even a gradual acceleration and then a
little harder of a tap on the gas pedal will get it to
catch. Then as I let go of the gas pedal, it will run at
1000 rpm’s while maintaining speed down the road
almost as if I were using cruise control. This is while
staying off the accelerator the entire time. I have no
clue what is going on... please help!

700 RPM would be an ideal idle RPM, but 600 isn't that far out of the ordinary. (Is the idle smooth and not lugging or missing?) As to having to goose the gas pedal to get it to shift, look at the clutch or tranny - any tranny shop can identify a slipping clutch pretty quick, or run it on a diagnostic stand and make sure all shift solenoids are good as well as computer signals. You could also look for vacuum leaks, unmetered air entering engine can throw off RPMs.
