Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Got this did plugs and wires cap and button and
retimed it because when I got it the timing was 180
out replaced the maf sensor and it ran and idled
fine for about 15 min shut it off tightened the
distributor bolt down and when I started it up again
it started running like it was still 180 out of time
would resetting the memory on my ECM fix this
problem and make it run right I'm at a loss with
what it could be it's getting spark air and fuel just
running ruff and will not idle what do I need to do
to fix this

I would double check the timing, the distributor placement. Did you bring the engine up to TDC on the compression stroke before planting the distributor?

Yes was brought to tdc I was told that resetting the ECM and driving will make it run right like it's running off of what the memory is stored in them ECM

It should just run if everything set correctly with the timing. I just don't think the timing is correct yet. What does the distributor cap look like, can you post a pic with the air filter off?

Yes but was it TDC on the compression stroke? And is the distributor cap one where the spark plug towers are horizontal? Not sticking straight up?

spark plug wire towers on the distributor cap, are they vertical or horizontal?

If you think resetting the computer is going to work then disconnect the battery for like 15 30 minutes. This will reset the computer since it is a OBD1, so its not going to hurt anything. I thing the timing is off yet.

But I will try retimeing it and see if there is any different results

Ok, thanks, I just have to know, I am on the other side of the screen and can only go by your input. The reason I asked on the distributor cap is because they went to a low profile cap that the towers are horizontal and by design, the rotor does not point to the #1 spark plug tower, the terminal inside that cap is off to the left, so you wouldn't point the rotor at the tower like on the distributor caps with the vertical spark plug towers. Just get the the #1 piston when its coming up to TDC, that it is pushing air out of the cylinder, the compression stroke.
