2002 Suzuki XL-7

Asked by IanSuzuki Dec 02, 2012 at 11:58 AM about the 2002 Suzuki XL-7 STD 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Suzuki XL-7.  I had to change my alternator belt and battery.  After I changed them, I can't
get my car to run properly.  When I start the car, the car doesn't hold the idle; it dies.  I basically have to
treat my car (automatic transmission) like a manual.  For example, when I come up  to a stop sign, I'd
have to put the car into neutral, rev the engin (so it doesn't die) and when it's my turn to go, switch back
to drive.  Please help

Look to see if you accidentally disconnected a small hose in the engine compartment.

That happens when the battery gets disconnected. The cars computer has to re learn the combustion settings.....it always happens to me....I have ro drive it like until i do some off and on cycles for the car to go stable again.

I had that problem anytime I happened to disconnect my battery on my 2002 Suzuki xl7. I usually cleaned out the air control valve, sitting atop the throttle body on the engine! It's easy: unscrew those three phillips screws, the valve falls out right into your hand, spray a bit of valve or carburetor cleaner on it, put it back in and you shall be good to go. I'm afraid, you have to repeat this action each time your battery is disconnected!

Apply the parking brake, apply foot to brake peddle, Start your XL-7 and put it in drive (without applying any gas on the accelerator). Allow the engine to find its happy place and go into low idle. After about 5 - 15 minutes it will have relearned where the throttle should be. Have a nice day.
