Car cranks and then dies. Replaced fuel
filter.  Check engine light blinks 5 times.

When the check engine light comes on, it means there is a fault code stored that may explain why the car stalls. Have the codes scanned for free at an auto parts store and fix accordingly. Write the numbers down and Google them for more info.
