There is this awful whining noise and my van is slipping into neutral then immediately back. How much does a new tranny cost? Would it be cheaper to replace or rebuild?

Noise gets louder only when pushing
on the gas. Noise is there when I
start the van and shortly goes away
until I give it gas. Feels like it pops
into neutral and immediately back
around 2nd gear. Kind of a stalling
feeling while going down the road.
Like a jerking forward, it's not
extreme but you can defiantly feel it.

what can you do when your gear shift is registering that it is in reverse when it actually positioned in park? I just experienced this and had to turn the car off or else it would have keep moving backward. Now i am not able to turn the car back on without it being in the park position.
