I have a 2002 SL1 with only 16,856 actual miles on it. I'm hearing a thumping sound under the car sometimes while driving.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I want to sell my Saturn but just this week I'm hearing a thumping sound from
under the center of the car sometimes when I'm driving. It seems to make
the noise going over a bump, like something is bouncing and hitting the
bottom of the car but it's infrequent. I had a new muffler and converter done
four years ago and had to have the front driver side spring and struts done
three years ago. I don't want to put any money into the car but feel I can't sell
it with the thumping noise. If I knew what it was and the cost to fix it then I
could tell potential buyers of the issue.

I'd check the muffler and converter hangers again all the way back to the tailpipe.

There is no engine vibration or movement at all. The thumping sound feels like it's near the rear when I go over a bump or a slight incline in my driveway.

To me it sounds as though your Mufflers moving around and so when they installed it the new one they might not have replaced the hangers or one was broken when they removed them and put them back on. I would check your hangers like the previous set poster said check your muffler hangers all your exhaust hangers that go from the engine to the back of the car but it sounds like your Mufflers beaten the undercarriage.
