Car struggling to turn over

I have a 2001 saturn S II model. i beleive the head gasket is going back,
temperature rises mid point then fan cools her down. I have white smoke
coming from tail pipe. I recently experienced car not starting and replaced
starter and changed spark plugs. However, car is straining to turn over.
Alternator is good, after testing. could it be the battery?
