Probably a problem with the EVAP. When you put gas in your car the air and fumes are displaced in to a charcoal canister that soaks up the fumes from the tank, instead of being released in to the atmosphere, and are purged when car is started , by intake vacuum. If there is a fault somewhere and the canister gets saturated with liquid gasoline it will run very rich for a few seconds or even minutes, while being purged. If it stalls after starting, and/or runs rough then goes back to normal after a few seconds that is likely the problem.

Always stop pumping at first click of nozzle. Topping off can cause liquid gasoline to enter EVAP. This is Generic system, most all cars same or similar ...click for full screen
